Toshiba HD-A1 (MRSP $499.99)
The Toshiba HD-A1 is Toshiba’s first generation HD-DVD player. This player is backward compatible, so it can play your old DVDs as well as HD-DVDs. HD-DVD Discs holds 3 times more than the regular DVD. This is the first model to be introduced by any manufacturer.

The Toshiba HD-A1 is probably the model of choice for most consumers unless they decide to go the higher model, Toshiba HD-XA1. Though the Toshiba HD-XA1 has more bells and whistles, there is also quite a difference in price between the two, making this the better bet for the average consumer.
