Toshiba HDDVD first and second generation

Your online resource to high definition DVD reviews.  Most TVs purchased today have the ability to produce high definition pictures from sources such as high definition tuners, so you can watch HD programming.   The next new exciting technology, especially for Plasma and LCD TVs are the High Definition Players and the Blu-ray players, which play stored high definition content on a single disc.  Currently, the only way to watch HD programming on demand was to use a HD tuner that stored the programs on the hard drive (PVR – Personal video recorder).

Why are we excited by the HD DVD Players?  Since the current Plasmas/LCD/Projection televisions should have HD capability, consumers were limited to playing HD programs on demand.   The HD-DVD players can produce stunning, crisp images that create 720 progressive lines or 1080 interlaced lines of resolution.    As consumers we want to utilize our HD-TV’s to it fullest extent and the new HD-DVD will cross us into a new generation of home viewing.

The HD-DVDs are at 15G capacity and 30G for the dual-layer format.  Regular DVDs can hold up to 4.7gig per layer.  More capacity means better movies in high definition format and more bonus content.  The new HD-DVDs will be backward compatible with the current DVD format.

The major companies that will be supporting HD-DVD include:

- Toshiba
- NEC
- Microsoft
- Sanyo
- HP
- Intel.

There is a plan to bring out 200 HD-DVD titles by year end of 2006.   Just when you think that your DVD movie collection was complete, you may consider the same movie in HD-DVD for your collection.  It’s like buying old laser disc movies 10 years ago; then buying the better format DVDs; and now you have to buy another version of the movie HD-DVD.   Did I hear “ka-ching” for the movie studios?

With new HD definition TV’s that plasma, LCD, and projection TV offer, the HD-DVD will offer a new generation of on demand movies or programs at your fingertips.
